The Federal Government commenced the sale of rice at a subsidised rate in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Thursday. The initiative, aimed at providing relief to Nigerians, was officially launched by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, who was represented by Mrs. Toyin Ayo-Ajayi, the State Director of the Ministry.

Speaking during the launch, Kyari highlighted that the sale of subsidised rice was part of the government’s broader efforts to alleviate the impact of rising food prices on Nigerians. The distribution process, he noted, would be closely monitored by federal agencies to ensure transparency, fairness, and security.

Kyari explained that buyers would need their National Identification Number (NIN) and Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card to purchase a 50kg bag of rice at the subsidised price of N40,000. He commended Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, for his proactive approach and leadership, making Ogun one of the first states to benefit from this initiative.

“Ogun has one of the most organised templates ensuring that this gets to the three senatorial districts of the state and reaches citizens at the grassroots,” Kyari said, praising Governor Abiodun’s efforts to enhance the welfare of the state’s residents.

Governor Abiodun, in his address, expressed gratitude for President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to addressing food inflation and improving citizens’ living conditions through this initiative.
