Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has shared insights into his enduring political rift with Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). In an interview with Ebere TV, Amaechi discussed Wike’s role as his Chief of Staff during his governorship and the political dynamics in Rivers State.
Amaechi emphasized his influence on the careers of Rivers politicians, stating, “Name any Rivers politician that didn’t pass through me.” He reflected on his early political experiences, contrasting the values that defined his generation with today’s political landscape. “When I became governor, Wike became Chief of Staff,” he recalled, adding, “but I don’t like calling his name.”
Describing his entry into politics at age 22, Amaechi noted that he was part of the Rufus George camp, which, despite being “poor and broke,” was grounded in principles. He attributed his political choices to the strong sense of character instilled in him by his father. “Those of us who cared about character stood with Rufus,” he said.
Amaechi also highlighted his support for Peter Odili, noting that Odili’s integrity won him loyalty despite financial limitations. He lamented the shift in political values over the years, stating, “The crop of politicians then are different from what we have now,” and emphasized that honesty was a core principle he imparted to those he mentored.
This ongoing rift between Amaechi and Wike marks another chapter in their strained relationship, with both leaders frequently clashing over political ideologies and governance styles in Rivers State.
