In a significant move to improve the governance of health research in Nigeria, the Federal Government unveiled the National Health Research Ethics Committee (NHREC) Electronic Portal on Friday in Lagos.

The NHREC e-portal, introduced by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Tunji Alausa, aims to streamline and modernize the ethical review and approval process for health research proposals.

The electronic portal was developed through a collaboration between the National Health Research Ethics Committee (NHREC) and Public Health Information, Surveillance Solutions and Systems (PHIS3), with technical support from the United States Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

At the launch, Minister Alausa emphasized that the portal would enhance efficiency, transparency, and accountability within Nigeria’s health research framework. He described the initiative as a “remarkable milestone” and praised the collaboration that made the platform possible.

“The electronic platform is more than just a technological tool; it is a commitment to integrity and accountability in health research,” Alausa stated, highlighting that the portal aligns with global standards and prioritizes the rights, dignity, and safety of research participants.

The e-portal is designed to centralize and simplify the submission process for research proposals, which will help reduce delays and eliminate redundancies. Alausa noted that this innovation would bolster Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global health research arena, paving the way for data-driven innovations and advancements in clinical practice.

Dr. Adeola Adeyeye, Associate Director of Science at the U.S. CDC, commended the swift development of the platform, which took only six weeks. She acknowledged the smooth collaboration between the Nigerian government and international partners, stating that the platform would significantly shorten approval timelines and foster local and international research partnerships.
