The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has voiced his frustration regarding the poor condition of football pitches in Nigeria, stating that only one stadium is currently suitable for Grade A matches, which include those played by the Super Eagles.

Gusau made these remarks after accompanying Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State to inspect the ongoing rehabilitation of the Ape Aku Stadium in Makurdi. He expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the renovations and commended Governor Alia for his commitment to improving the stadium’s facilities.

He noted, “You all know that for now, you can play a Grade A match in Nigeria only in Uyo stadium. It is becoming a major source of worry for me and other Nigerians that in a country like Nigeria, we have only one stadium where we can play Grade A matches.”

The NFF President highlighted the importance of having an alternative venue for the Super Eagles, expressing optimism about Makurdi becoming that venue with the governor’s support. He stated, “With the commitment of the governor, I know it is going to be possible, and by the grace of God, we will do everything to support him to achieve the dream.”

In his effort to revitalize grassroots football, Gusau mentioned plans to organize Under-15 and Under-17 Governor’s Cup competitions across various states, stressing the importance of these tournaments in discovering young talents. He remarked, “We do not want to see teams like Lobi Stars all the time going out to source for players; they can source for those players here through those tournaments.”

Governor Alia echoed Gusau’s sentiments, emphasizing the unifying power of sports and its potential economic benefits. He expressed his satisfaction with the NFF’s commitment to partner with Benue State in this endeavor, stating, “Benue has a DNA for football, and to see the NFF President encouraging us shows that it is something we can achieve.”

The collaboration aims not only to enhance the state’s football infrastructure but also to foster a competitive environment that can help identify and nurture local talent.
