The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has expressed surprise over Starlink’s recent announcement regarding new subscription rates in Nigeria, emphasizing that the company did not receive regulatory approval for the price adjustment. The NCC highlighted that although Starlink had submitted a request for a price review, a decision on this matter had not yet been reached. Additionally, they noted potential regulatory violations under the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003.
In a follow-up clarification, the NCC acknowledged that the initial statement was issued prematurely and requested all media outlets to retract any related publications. Reuben Muoka, the Director of Public Affairs at the NCC, stated, “We request that all media platforms kindly withdraw the previously issued statement on Starlink’s price hike, as it was issued in error.”
He further urged those who have already published the statement to remove it from their platforms. The NCC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining regulatory stability and creating a conducive environment for investment in the telecommunications sector. Stakeholders have continued to call for a review of tariffs to attract further investment.
The NCC expressed gratitude for the cooperation of the media and apologized for any confusion or inconvenience caused by the earlier release.
