ATCON CALLS FOR REVIEW OF STARLINK OPERATIONS IN NIGERIA

The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) has urged for a comprehensive review of Starlink’s operations in the country, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a level playing field for both local and foreign telecom operators. This call comes in light of the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) recent decision to sanction Starlink for implementing unauthorized subscription price increases.

ATCON President Tony Emoekpere expressed concerns about Starlink’s business model, which enables the company to operate in Nigeria without making significant local infrastructure investments. In contrast, domestic operators have made substantial investments in the Nigerian market. “Starlink’s decision to raise prices without regulatory approval puts local operators at a disadvantage,” Emoekpere stated. He stressed the need for fair competition within a consistent regulatory framework.

Emoekpere highlighted that Starlink’s pricing model, which is aligned with international benchmarks, creates an uneven competitive landscape that places undue pressure on Nigerian telecom companies. He noted, “Local operators, who have invested in Nigeria, are subject to stricter regulatory oversight. Competing with foreign entities that benchmark against the dollar creates a serious challenge.”

He further called for a reassessment of Starlink’s licensing conditions, urging the government to ensure that all telecom operators contribute equally to Nigeria’s economy. “We must reassess Starlink’s license and require them to localize their operations. Otherwise, we risk creating an unfair advantage that could harm local players,” he concluded.

ATCIS CONDEMNS STARLINK’S 97% PRICE HIKE

In a related development, the Association of Telephone, Cable TV, and Internet Subscribers of Nigeria (ATCIS) has condemned Starlink’s recent 97% price increase for its internet services. This hike raised Starlink’s monthly subscription from N38,000 to N75,000 and increased the price of its hardware kits by 34%, from N440,000 to N590,000.

ATCIS National President, Sina Bilesanmi, expressed strong dissatisfaction with the price hike, criticizing Starlink for failing to engage with Nigerian consumers and bypassing necessary regulatory procedures. “We strongly condemn this action by Starlink. They did not engage Nigerian subscribers or seek the necessary approvals before imposing such a substantial price hike,” Bilesanmi stated.
