The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed an ongoing investigation into allegations regarding the accommodation of convicted cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky. The findings are currently pending, as disclosed by Abubakar Umar, Deputy Controller of Corrections and Service Public Relations Officer, during an interview on Sunday in Abuja.

Bobrisky was convicted in April for mutilating the naira and sentenced to six months in prison. Controversy arose after Vincent Otse, a social media influencer and human rights activist, released an audio recording in which Bobrisky allegedly claimed to have spent his jail term in a private apartment. In the recording, he purportedly stated that he paid N15 million to officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to drop money laundering charges against him.

In response to these allegations, the Federal Government inaugurated an independent investigative panel on September 30 to examine claims of corruption and violations of standard operating procedures within the NCoS. Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, emphasized that the committee would also investigate claims that some correctional service personnel provided alternative accommodation for Bobrisky.

Umar reiterated the NCoS’s commitment to rehabilitation and safety, explaining that inmates undergo comprehensive assessments upon admission to determine their security risks, needs, and responsivity. The admission board evaluates each inmate to ensure safe housing and effective rehabilitation.
