Most Rev. Matthew Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, urged Nigerians to hold political officeholders accountable for their campaign promises during a keynote address at a centenary public lecture and awards ceremony organized by the Catholic Herald on Saturday.
The event, held at the Mother of Perpetual Help Church in Victoria Island, Lagos State, celebrated the centenary anniversary of the Catholic Herald, Nigeria’s oldest surviving newspaper.
In his address themed “The Nigerian State: Transcending Challenges, Attending True Nationhood,” Kukah emphasized the importance of nation-building and highlighted that the quality of civil society plays a crucial role in driving change within the country.
He called on political leaders to adopt people-oriented policies and to involve citizens in the planning and implementation of projects that address the needs of the masses. Kukah stressed that “Nigeria’s journey to nationhood should be of concern to the people and with an eye on the desired destination,” urging a collective effort towards achieving true nationhood.
