Vice-President Kashim Shettima has directed the implementation of a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s road safety measures aimed at significantly reducing traffic accidents in the country. This initiative includes the inauguration of the National Road Safety Advisory Council, which has been tasked with the goal of reducing traffic accidents by 50% before 2030.

During a meeting with the leadership of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday, Shettima underscored the urgent need to address the rising number of road accidents occurring on the nation’s highways.

Comprehensive Solutions Needed

In his address, Shettima stated, “We need a comprehensive solution for our road safety challenges. The whole ecosystem is not as it should be.” He emphasized the importance of tackling the issues faced by the FRSC and drastically reducing road traffic accidents attributed to non-adherence to traffic regulations.

The Vice-President urged for a strategic approach to road safety that aligns with international best practices, citing examples from countries like Dubai and the UK. He remarked, “In places like Dubai and the UK, they have mechanisms to check road traffic violators, capture their car number plates, and charge them directly from their bank accounts. This way, people are encouraged to obey the law. We need to be a disciplined nation.”

Leveraging Technology for Improvement

Shettima highlighted the potential for leveraging technology to enhance road safety. He pointed out the need for enforcing discipline among road users to create a safer environment. The Vice-President reiterated the interconnected nature of road safety with broader security concerns, emphasizing that improving road safety is crucial for overall national security.

This overhaul of Nigeria’s road safety measures reflects a proactive approach to combating the increasing incidence of traffic accidents, and it aims to create a safer road environment for all citizens.
