A devastating flood hit Ondo town in Ondo State this weekend, destroying property worth millions of naira. Despite the widespread damage, no loss of life was reported, though many residents were displaced.

The flood, triggered by a heavy downpour on Friday that lasted several hours, affected multiple areas, including Itanla, Oka, Odo Ijomu, Bethlehem, and parts of the Akure-Ondo Expressway. Reports indicated that many homes and vehicles were submerged.

In response, the state government swiftly ordered evacuations in the affected areas and initiated a rapid response to prevent further damage. Oyeniyi Oseni, the Environment Commissioner, stated that the government had deployed Amphibious Excavators to erosion-prone areas for dredging, aiming to prevent future flooding.

Oseni attributed the flooding to unlawful development on waterways, particularly in an estate at Fagun and along the Ife road area. He assured the public that his ministry would collaborate with relevant sections of the government to address these illegal developments and avert future occurrences.
