Nollywood director Izu Ojukwu, in collaboration with Adonijah Owiriwa, is set to release 77: The FESTAC Conspiracy, a sequel to the acclaimed film 76.
Based on true-life events, this historical drama follows a resentful ex-serviceman who is drawn into a movement aimed at challenging Africa’s political status quo. The film explores themes of revolution and Pan-African unity against the backdrop of the vibrant FESTAC festival.
In a statement released alongside the trailer for the sequel, the official synopsis reads:
“While FESTAC dazzles the world with vibrant displays of African unity and culture, an aggrieved ex-serviceman is drawn into a covert Pan-African movement poised to ignite a revolution that could reshape the political order of the continent.”
Recap of 76
The prequel, 76, is set six years after the Nigerian Civil War. It tells the story of Joseph Dewa, a young officer from the Middle Belt, who falls in love with Suzanne, an O-level student from the Southeastern region. Their romance faces challenges due to military postings and family pressures, culminating in Joseph being falsely accused of involvement in the failed 1976 military coup and the assassination of General Murtala Mohammed. Suzanne, while enduring emotional turmoil and the delivery of their baby girl, strives to prove Joseph’s innocence.
77: The FESTAC Conspiracy promises to delve deeper into the historical context and political dynamics of the time while continuing the emotional journey of its characters. The film is produced by Adonijah Owiriwa and Izu Ojukwu, with a script written by Olisa Elo.
