Grieving Governor Umo Eno has described his late wife, Pastor Patience Eno, as “everything a man could ever wish for in a virtuous woman,” expressing that he would “miss her for a lifetime.” In a poignant broadcast made nine days after the shocking passing of the Akwa Ibom State First Lady, the governor shared the deep pain of losing his wife of 38 years.
In a Friday morning address titled “We’re Perplexed But Not In Despair,” referencing 2 Corinthians 4:8, the governor expressed gratitude to those who have offered condolences during this difficult time. He stated, “Her Excellency, Pastor (Mrs.) Patience (Oluwakemi) Umo Eno, was everything a man could ever wish for in a virtuous woman. My prayer partner, counsellor, cheerleader, best critic, homemaker, and permanently smiling. I will miss her for a lifetime.”
Governor Eno thanked President Bola Tinubu and everyone who sent condolences, noting the “incredible outpouring of love, support, prayers, and words of encouragement” he received through phone calls, messages, and visits since the unexpected loss. He specifically appreciated the people of Akwa Ibom for their rare show of love and support, particularly the youths who suspended planned national protests in honor of his late wife.
He continued, “Let me particularly thank our dear people from all strata of life, who have risen in unison across party lines to commiserate with us, through prayers, condolences, and phone calls, and even suspended campaign activities to honor our First Lady. We are deeply grateful.”
Assuring the public, Eno pledged to uphold the initiatives that his wife held dear, such as the Golden Initiative for All (GIFA), emphasizing that these programs would be sustained and expanded. He stated, “The machinery of State will continue to function seamlessly as Government will continue to be alive to her responsibilities. Our focus will not be shifted from rendering services to our people with renewed strength, as this is what Kemi has always prayed for.”
He also commended security agencies for maintaining peace during this solemn moment and urged them to continue their efforts as the state approaches Local Government Elections.
The governor acknowledged the public’s respect for his family’s privacy during this time of loss, trusting that this respect would continue as burial arrangements will be made public at the appropriate time. He concluded by affirming their hope, stating, “We will not mourn as those who have no hope in Christ Jesus.
