Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has announced that the return of Emirates Airlines to Nigeria will enhance local airlines’ access to international destinations. This statement follows Emirates’ resumption of services after a two-year hiatus.
Speaking in Lagos after arriving on an Emirates flight from the UAE, Keyamo assured that the airline’s return is permanent. He explained that recent discussions surrounding the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) between Nigeria and the UAE were focused on securing international routes for Nigerian carriers. According to Keyamo, local airlines now have the opportunity to fly to any destination within the UAE.
“With Emirates’ return, there is more competition on international routes, which is vital for fostering healthy competition,” Keyamo said, adding that a competitive environment will lead to better pricing, ultimately benefiting Nigerian travelers.
He emphasized Dubai’s strategic importance as a global hub, which connects numerous countries. Additionally, Keyamo revealed that local airlines can now enter code-sharing agreements with Emirates, giving them the right of first refusal.
Keyamo credited President Bola Tinubu for his support in facilitating Emirates’ return and restoring diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the UAE. He noted that the previous strained relationship, which included visa suspensions and the halt of Emirates flights, had adversely affected many Nigerians with investments and interests in the UAE.
“The fallout in relations between both countries was damaging, especially for Nigerians with significant investments in the UAE,” he explained. “This agreement is not just for national pride; it’s a victory for the Nigerian people.”
In conclusion, Keyamo highlighted the significance of the newly signed BASA, stating that it redefines the aviation relationship between Nigeria and the UAE, making it healthier and more open, which will ultimately benefit Nigerians.
