Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has urged Nigerians to unite against the retrogressive forces threatening the country’s corporate existence and sustainable development. He made this call during his Independence Day speech at the Cenotaph in Asaba on Tuesday.
In his address, Oborevwori emphasized the importance of reflection and collective contribution to national growth. He stated, “It is my prayer that we use the occasion of this anniversary to engage in sober reflection and think of how each one of us can contribute our quota to the growth and development of the country.” He highlighted the need for resilience in combating bigotry, inciting rhetoric, and insurgency that threaten national unity.
Paying tribute to the nation’s founding fathers, Oborevwori expressed optimism that the current challenges would soon pass. “While challenges in life are inevitable, hope gives us the energy and motivation to forge ahead with the firm belief that there is always light at the end of the tunnel,” he said, reiterating his confidence that Nigeria would emerge stronger from its current predicament.
The Governor highlighted his administration’s efforts to alleviate the hardships caused by fiscal and monetary reforms. He reported a significant increase in beneficiaries of the Delta Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus (D-CARES) program, which grew from 36,353 to 208,209—an increase of 473%. He also mentioned the empowerment of over 5,000 individuals through the MORE Grant Scheme for traders and artisans, and the distribution of farm inputs to over 6,000 farmers to boost agricultural production.
In collaboration with the African Union Development Agency, the state government has approved N1 billion to empower 2,000 smallholder farmers, furthering its commitment to enhancing the agricultural sector and achieving food security.
Oborevwori commended President Tinubu for establishing a National Youth Conference aimed at integrating youth into nation-building efforts, affirming the state’s commitment to investing in policies that inspire hope and facilitate access to resources for wealth creation.
Reflecting on his administration’s achievements over the past sixteen months, he noted progress in rehabilitating roads, upgrading schools, and improving housing projects. “I dare say, we have made significant progress, and I will be the first to admit that we still have much to do,” he acknowledged.
The Governor underscored the need to reduce crime by strengthening partnerships with security agencies and enlisting the private sector’s participation in community safety efforts. He announced plans to revitalize the Delta State Security Trust Fund through a forthcoming fundraising event, calling for collective cooperation to ensure a safe and secure Delta State.
In closing, Governor Oborevwori encouraged citizens to be their brothers’ keepers and maintain peace, stating, “No meaningful development can take place in the absence of peace.” He expressed hope that the anniversary would serve as a moment for rededication to strengthening national unity, stating, “Collectively, we can advance Delta through our MORE agenda.”
