WHO IS GENERATION Z?

Must read

< 1 mn read

Generation Z generally includes individuals born between 1997 and 2012, although some sources extend the range to 1995–2010. This generation is known for its eccentricities, outspoken nature, diversity, inclusivity, and love for 90s-inspired Y2K fashion.

THE MEANING BEHIND THE NAME

Gen Z follows Generation X (1965–1980) and derives its name from the alphabetical progression after Generation Y, also known as Millennials. The “Z” has been interpreted as standing for “Zoomers,” reflecting both the quick finger motions Gen Z makes on touchscreens and their rapid adaptation to new technology.

THE DIGITAL NATIVES

Growing up with the internet, smartphones, and social media, Generation Z is considered digital natives. Their immersion in these tools has profoundly shaped how they communicate, their worldview, and their engagement with social issues. Many have become content creators and influencers, leveraging the internet to express their creativity and perspectives.

ORIGIN OF THE TERM

While no single individual is credited with coining “Gen Z,” the term gained traction in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Researchers and demographers used it to label the generation following Millennials, marking their distinction as the first to grow up in a predominantly digital world.
