The Coalition of Civil Society Groups in Kaduna State has officially expressed its opposition to the nationwide protests scheduled for October 1, 2024. At a press conference held on Monday, the group’s spokesman, Comrade Yusuf Lawal, emphasized the importance of viewing the date as a time for celebration and reflection on the contributions of past heroes rather than as a day for civil unrest.

Lawal stated, “We firmly distance ourselves from these events and emphasize our commitment to constructive engagement rather than disruption.” He described October 1 as a day to honor the collective journey of the state and the nation, urging unity and respect for shared history.

Highlighting the government’s initiatives, Lawal pointed to the establishment of skill acquisition centers set to begin in December as a significant opportunity for community development and economic empowerment. He called for transparency and equity in the selection process for these programs, emphasizing the need to address the diverse needs of the community without favoritism.

The Coalition urged residents to focus on participating in local government elections rather than engaging in potentially chaotic protests. “The upcoming local elections provide a vital platform for voicing concerns and enacting change,” Lawal said. He encouraged grassroots involvement as a means to influence governance and drive positive change.

The group also expressed concern over the involvement of minors in protests, stating, “Responsible parenting is crucial, and we unequivocally oppose the participation of children in such activities. The safety and well-being of our children must take precedence over political expression.”

Lawal acknowledged the government’s shortcomings but insisted on allowing time for its commitments to be fulfilled. He cited the negative consequences of recent protests, particularly the “End Bad Governance” demonstrations, which resulted in vandalism and tragic loss of life, affecting businesses and diverting resources meant for development.

The Coalition emphasized that historical protests have often failed to address systemic issues, advocating instead for constructive dialogue, community engagement, and collaboration with the government as more effective means to bring about lasting change.

In conclusion, the Coalition of Civil Society Groups called for unity and cooperation in addressing grievances and building a better future for all citizens in Kaduna State, warning against the socioeconomic impacts of protests.
