The management of Edwards Private School in Agege, Lagos State, is embroiled in a contentious dispute with the Agege Local Government Area concerning the demolition of the school’s 30-year-old three-storey building.
The school claims ownership of both the building and the land, accusing the council authorities of conducting an illegal demolition. In contrast, the council justifies its actions by stating that the school lacks proper title to the property.
A Vanguard reporter present during the demolition noted a “confiscation notice” posted on the school’s fence. Witnesses reported that remnants of computers and other electronic items were destroyed during the council’s operation. Residents and former students expressed their sorrow over the council’s decision, emphasizing the school’s long-standing contributions to the community, particularly for less privileged residents of Agege.
Following the demolition, the school’s books, files, and other belongings were left scattered on the premises, as staff were reportedly not permitted to remove their possessions beforehand. The reporter covering the event faced harassment and assault from council officials.
A staff member, identified only as Mrs. Adetoro, informed the reporter that the school possesses an approved building plan, a court judgment, a registered conveyance, and the governor’s consent, along with a government letter of excision/release for the land. She asserted that these documents, which establish the school’s title to the property, were registered with the Lagos State Government after securing the governor’s consent 30 years ago. Additionally, she noted that the school has consistently paid various levies, taxes, and rates to the Agege Local Government Area since 1992.
