A group of Nigerian youths, led by Mr. Abuah Martins, Chief Executive Officer of Aprilcentaur Network, has urged political leaders to exhibit exemplary leadership to mitigate the rising frustration and anger among the populace.

Speaking at a media chat held at the Alumni Building, University of Ibadan, the youths expressed their concerns over the pervasive feelings of frustration and anger resulting from poor governance and unfulfilled dreams. The event was part of the preparations for the launch of an anthology titled “All the Colours of Madness,” co-authored by several young writers including Yusuf Sibraim, Miss Odion-Osigwe Emike, Miss George Vanessa, Oreoluwa Asala, Oyinda Oyedokun, and Ekpenisi Nwajesu.

Voices of Change

During the chat, Folarin Olaniyi, Publisher of Emotion Press, remarked on the political landscape in Nigeria, stating:

“I think the political landscape of Nigeria can be said to be egalitarian in the sense that the older generation keeps putting themselves in the system. The youths are doing well in technology and other sectors of the economy. That is why I chose the publishing job because of my interest in education. I have different opinions of how we can express our anger and that makes our writing.”

Odion-Osigwe Emike shared her thoughts on the anthology, stating:

“I particularly love this project because it was a conversation that I don’t know that so many people will have opinions on. Everybody makes us angry, from government to our parents, lack of jobs, and so many others.”

She emphasized the generational aspect of anger and its implications, noting:

“It seems like generational anger with no solution. When they told us that we should write around it, I started thinking about how anger was being forced on us. It is a normal thing we do every day that just allows us to be angry; there is no harm in being angry, but when anger is not expressed, it affects not just your life but your community. It will lead to bad government and toxic practices.”

A Call to Action

The sentiments expressed by these youths underline the urgent need for political leaders to address the root causes of anger and dissatisfaction in the country. By fostering a culture of accountability and engagement, they hope to pave the way for a more just and equitable society where the voices of the younger generation are not only heard but also valued.
