NORTHERN COORDINATORS WITHDRAW FROM OCTOBER 1 PROTEST DUE TO SECURITY CONCERNS

< 1 mn read

The Northern Coordinators of the #EndBadGovernance Protest have announced their withdrawal from the nationwide protest scheduled for October 1, citing insufficient security measures for protesters. This decision follows the national organizers’ failure to adequately address concerns about ensuring the safety of protesters and preventing potential disruptions by hoodlums.

Comrade Abdullahi Daura and Malam Mohammed Musa Biu, Chairman and Secretary of the Northern Coordinators, voiced their worries about a potential recurrence of violence similar to that witnessed in Kano, Kaduna, and other Northern states. They noted that members are increasingly anxious about another destructive incident.

The Coordinators had sought security coverage at convergence points across the North but received no definitive responses or measures aimed at preventing violence and property damage. Consequently, they are urging members from all 19 states to withdraw until security agencies can provide necessary assurances.

While emphasizing their commitment to pressuring the Federal Government to reverse detrimental policies, the Coordinators prioritize the safety of innocent citizens. They have advised members to maintain calm and peace during the Independence Day celebrations on October 1 across the North.

This decision follows previous protests that were met with violence, leading to casualties and arrests. The #EndBadGovernance protests initially began on August 1, 2024, in response to Nigeria’s economic hardships and hunger crisis.
