As Nigeria approaches its 64th Independence Anniversary on October 1, former Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Osita Okechukwu, has called on citizens to reflect on the nation’s achievements despite current socioeconomic challenges.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu, Okechukwu, a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), emphasized the importance of introspection during this occasion. He highlighted that, while economic difficulties persist, there are still many positive aspects to celebrate, such as:

  • A united nation
  • A growing population, particularly a youthful demographic
  • An increase in educational institutions, including universities and schools
  • Improved healthcare facilities, roads, and railways

“I honestly thank Almighty God,” Okechukwu stated, expressing gratitude for these advancements.

He believes Nigeria is on the brink of an era where public interest policies will overshadow those driven by selfish motives. Okechukwu acknowledged that Nigerians are generally good followers and expressed optimism that positive changes are forthcoming.

Reflecting on past leadership, he remarked, “Our previous leaderships had good intentions but lacked the political will to commit class suicide.” He suggested that to effectively utilize Nigeria’s abundant human and material resources to alleviate poverty, leaders must prioritize the common good over individual interests.

As the Federal Government has declared Tuesday, October 1, a public holiday for the Independence Day celebration, Okechukwu encouraged Nigerians to meditate, pray, and possibly fast for the nation’s fortunes to improve.
