The Africa Film Society has officially launched its new Library, Theater, and Exhibition Space in East Legon, Ghana. The announcement was made on September 24, 2024, highlighting the organization’s commitment to preserving and promoting Africa’s cinematic heritage.

The statement expressed gratitude to attendees, which included notable figures from the industry such as Kwaw Ansah, King Ampaw, David Dontoh, Fred Amugi, and Akofa Edjeani. The new facility features a curated library comprising books, films, and vinyl soundtracks aimed at filmmakers and cinema enthusiasts.

In addition to the library, the Society has established a 50-seat Arthouse Theater, designed as an extension of their ongoing program, ‘Classics In the Park’. This initiative focuses on screening classic and contemporary films for members and the wider community.

Founded by Ghanaian filmmaker Blitz Bazawule, the Africa Film Society is now entering its 8th year of advocating for African cinema, nurturing new filmmakers, and cultivating an audience for their work. The Society aims to empower, educate, and inspire creativity in filmmaking that tells authentic African stories, offering free outdoor cinema experiences through the ‘Classics In The Park’ program, which highlights early African films from 1950 to 1980.

This new venture represents a significant step in supporting the African film industry and providing resources for both established and emerging talents in the region.
