Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, has emphasized the Federal Government’s dedication to prioritizing the welfare, training, and equipment needs of its troops to ensure operational readiness and efficiency. Speaking on the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration in Abuja, Abubakar, represented by Permanent Secretary Dr. Abubakar Kana, highlighted the government’s proactive approach to addressing security challenges by leveraging intelligence resources and fostering stronger partnerships with West African nations.

He assured the military of ongoing support in equipping the services with combat capabilities, aiming to minimize casualties during operations. The minister also noted the significant potential of Nigeria’s domestic defense industry, stating that revitalizing this sector is crucial for meeting the armed forces’ needs.

Abubakar pointed out the landmark achievement of President Bola Tinubu signing the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) Act into law on November 23, 2023, which empowers DICON to produce and manage ammunition, thereby establishing a reliable supply chain for the military.

The DICON Act also introduces the Defence Industry Technology, Research and Development Institute, which will focus on multidisciplinary research to foster the development of new military technologies, positioning Nigeria as a leader in defense innovation. The revitalization of DICON is seen as a symbol of national pride and self-sufficiency, with the potential to create jobs for youth, enhance Nigeria’s technological and military stature, and establish the country as a significant player in the global defense market.
