The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has expressed deep concern over allegations that officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) accepted a N15 million bribe to drop money laundering charges against Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky.

In a statement signed by NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, the legal body commended the EFCC’s swift decision to investigate the matter but called for an independent probe by the Attorney-General of the Federation and the National Security Adviser (NSA). The NBA emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation to determine if bribes were paid or if any charges were influenced in criminal cases.

The NBA also urged the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) to clarify allegations that Bobrisky did not serve his sentence in a correctional facility, calling for full transparency on the conditions under which he served his time. If the law or court order was breached, the NBA insisted that those responsible be prosecuted and dismissed from service.

The NBA further stressed that any public officials found complicit in the bribery allegations must face legal consequences, while reaffirming that all accused parties are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The statement concluded by calling for swift action to ensure accountability if any wrongdoing is uncovered.
