Medical experts have issued a warning to Nigerians regarding the dangers of self-medication and the misuse of antibiotics. This alert was raised during a one-day sensitization project focused on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) held in Enugu on Monday.

The event was organized by Winifred Maduko, a PhD student from the University of St. Andrews in the UK, as part of grassroots interventions aimed at increasing awareness of AMR and promoting responsible antibiotic use.

AMR has become a significant global health threat, severely diminishing the effectiveness of antibiotics against infections and diseases, with the World Health Organisation (WHO) listing it among the top 10 global health threats.

During her address on the theme “Grassroots Solutions to Combat Antimicrobials Resistance,” Maduko emphasized the importance of understanding the correct use of antibiotics. She noted that the public engagement project is being carried out in collaboration with Afia TV, South Sahara, and various social development organizations.

“Our goal is to raise awareness among the people of Enugu and beyond about antimicrobial resistance and the dangers of antibiotic misuse,” Maduko stated. “We aim to enhance knowledge about these drugs through public awareness initiatives.”

The program attracted over 60 participants, who are expected to return to their communities and disseminate the information. Maduko highlighted the concerning trend of Nigerians purchasing antibiotics over the counter, particularly in rural areas, without considering the potential consequences for their health. She reiterated that self-medication, especially regarding antibiotics, poses significant risks.
