In his first public statement after the 2024 Edo State governorship election, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Asue Ighodalo expressed profound gratitude to his supporters while sharply criticizing the election process. Ighodalo lost to Senator Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, in a highly controversial election.

Speaking on September 23, Ighodalo acknowledged the dedication of his supporters, many of whom, he said, braved numerous challenges to vote for him. He praised their resilience, stating, “I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you who has stood by us on this incredible journey.” He highlighted the difficulties faced by voters, including “intimidation, threats of violence, harassment, arrests, and financial inducements.”

Ighodalo, who campaigned on a platform of prosperity and development for all Edo citizens, lamented that his efforts were halted by what he described as external forces that worked against the will of the people. Referring to the election day, he remarked, “That day will forever be etched in our history as one of our darkest moments,” labeling it as the “brazen theft of our mandate.”

Despite the disappointing outcome, Ighodalo urged his supporters to remain steadfast, expressing hope that their cause would ultimately prevail. He concluded with a message of resolve, declaring, “The illusory triumph of evil over good is only temporary,” and pledged to continue striving for a better future for Edo State.
