In a pioneering effort to enhance the lives of Nigerians living with diabetes, Reliance Health has partnered with Platos Health to conduct a pilot study demonstrating the transformative impact of health technology on managing chronic diseases.

This collaboration highlights the vital role of innovative digital solutions in empowering individuals to manage their health while achieving substantial cost savings.

Reliance Health, dedicated to providing accessible and affordable healthcare through health insurance plans and telemedicine services, focused the pilot study on the effectiveness and economic benefits of Platos, a virtual platform for chronic disease management among Reliance HMO enrollees. The results indicate a promising future for diabetes care in Nigeria, marked by significant health improvements and reduced healthcare costs.

Key Outcomes from the Study Include:

  • Improvement in Blood Sugar Control: Participants experienced an average reduction of approximately 12 percent in fasting blood sugar levels over a 12-week period, crucial for effective diabetes management.
  • Reduced Insulin Dependency: The total insulin required for blood sugar control decreased by about 15 percent, from 94 IU to 80 IU. Notably, two participants achieved reductions of 43% and 20% in their insulin usage, leading to estimated savings of over N88,000 for both the insurance provider and enrollees during the study.

These outcomes underscore the positive effects of integrating advanced health tech solutions into chronic disease management. By utilizing Platos Health’s virtual platform, Reliance Health enrollees achieved significant health improvements with fewer resources, enhancing their quality of life while lowering healthcare costs.

Dr. Ugochi Nwosu, Senior Vice President of Clinical Services at Reliance Health, remarked, “This pilot study illustrates the incredible potential of technology to enhance patient health outcomes and reduce expenses. We are proud to collaborate with Platos Health to deliver such impactful solutions to our enrollees.”

Dr. Itopa Jimoh, Senior Medical Advisor at Platos Health, expressed enthusiasm about the positive changes observed in Reliance HMO enrollees’ lives, stating, “Our mission is to make effective chronic disease management accessible to everyone. This study reinforces the value of our platform in achieving that goal.”
