The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) announced that water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon has been released into the Niger and Benue Rivers, prompting a warning for residents in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer locations. This release follows a recent tragedy in Maiduguri, where over 30 people died and thousands of homes were destroyed due to overflow from the Alau Dam.

Umar Mohammed, NIHSA’s Director General, emphasized the agency’s coordination with Cameroonian authorities to release the water in phases to mitigate flooding risks across 11 Nigerian states. He stated that while there is currently calm, the situation requires vigilance as water levels rise.

NIHSA identified the following flood-prone states: Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers, and Rivers. Mohammed urged individuals to take proactive measures, including clearing drainage systems and moving away from flood plains, as these efforts are vital in preventing further flooding.

He reiterated the shared responsibility in flood prevention and mentioned that a report has been submitted to the Presidency recommending the desilting of certain dams in Nigeria to manage water flow more effectively.
