The Association of Private Practising Surveyors of Nigeria (APPSN), a subgroup of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), has raised concerns over declining ethical standards within the surveying profession. During their 2024 Annual Professional Workshop and Luncheon held in Lagos, they stressed the need for concerted efforts to uphold the profession’s integrity and reputation.

With the theme “The Practice of Cadastral: Understanding The Technicalities, Ethics, Market Dynamics, Policies, Innovation/Reforms, Value-Added Services & Its Politics,” the event focused on improving cadastral practice and encouraging surveyors to adhere strictly to ethical guidelines. Attendees were urged to embrace technology as a way to ensure sustainable and high-quality services in the field.

Guest lecturer Surv. Olumide Adewebi called on surveyors to reject unethical practices that could harm the profession, emphasizing that surveying is a competitive business. He highlighted issues such as undercutting and agent signing, urging professionals to address these challenges to ensure the long-term viability of cadastral practice in Lagos.

Adewebi pointed out that globally, cadastral practice accounts for 70 to 80 percent of surveying activities and emphasized the importance of enhanced training, education, and regulations to combat quackery and ensure the profession’s growth.

In his welcome address, APPSN Lagos Chairman Ibikunle Adaranijo underscored the event’s objective of educating professionals on emerging trends and called on stakeholders to support efforts in eradicating quackery. He reiterated the association’s ongoing campaign against unethical practices, citing the impact of their awareness programs, including a regular radio show on Radio Lagos.

Adaranijo reaffirmed the association’s commitment to protecting the integrity of the surveying profession and maintaining high standards.
