Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia of Benue State announced on Thursday that the state is experiencing relative peace, allowing farmers to return to previously abandoned farms following years of clashes between farmers and herders. Speaking after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu, Alia highlighted that this farming season has seen significant improvements in security, enabling more agricultural activity.

Alia noted that since 1999, Benue’s agricultural productivity had suffered due to insecurity, but the return to farming has picked up since last year, with this season seeing a noticeable shift. “We need to produce more and fill our basket to capacity,” he stated, referring to Benue’s reputation as the “Food Basket of the Nation.”

While he acknowledged that minor conflicts remain in two to three local governments, he emphasized that efforts are being made to address these skirmishes and fully restore peace across the state.

In response to federal flood warnings, Alia shared that his administration has taken preventive measures, including sensitizing riverbank residents. He also called on the Federal Government to assist with dredging the River Benue to further mitigate the risk of flooding. Additionally, the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) is prepared to manage any flood-related challenges that may arise.
