Former President Olusegun Obasanjo disclosed that former military Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar nearly denied Nigeria a $280 million telecommunications deal. Obasanjo recounted that during the transition from landline to mobile phones, Abubakar aimed to award the contract to his associates for $3 million. Obasanjo suggested auctioning the contract, resulting in a $280 million deal and fostering competition among telecom companies.

He shared these details at the launch of “The Catalyst: Nigerian ICT Evolution Through a Journalist’s Lens” by former Editor of The PUNCH, Mr. Dayo Oketola, in Lagos. Obasanjo noted that the initial offer was significantly lower than the auctioned amount, which also led to the entry of major telecom players like MTN, Glo, and Airtel. He emphasized that creating a conducive environment for investment remains crucial for Nigeria’s development.

President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, Mr. Eze Anaba, praised Oketola’s book as a testament to his dedication to journalism, highlighting its exploration of the complexities of news delivery. Notable figures at the event included Minister of Information and National Orientation Alhaji Mohammed Idris, represented by Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, former Governor of Rivers State Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, and other distinguished guests.
