Harry Kane netted four goals, including three penalties, as Bayern Munich defeated Dinamo Zagreb 9-2 at home on Tuesday, becoming the first team to score nine goals in a Champions League match. Kane’s hat trick in the second half took his Champions League tally to 33 goals, surpassing Wayne Rooney’s record of 30 for an English player.

Despite the dominant scoreline, Bayern faced a challenging spell after goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was injured and Zagreb quickly scored two goals early in the second half to narrow the gap to 3-2. However, Kane’s additional goals, along with strikes from Michael Olise, Raphael Guerreiro, Leroy Sane, and Leon Goretzka, ensured Bayern’s comfortable win.

Kane praised the team’s performance but acknowledged that they “got away with” their second-half lapse, warning that stronger opposition could capitalize on similar mistakes.

This victory also set a new record for Bayern, surpassing their previous best of 8-2 against Barcelona in 2020. The German giants now boast 20 consecutive wins in opening Champions League matches dating back to 2002-03.

Goal difference is expected to play an even more significant role under the new Champions League format, making the emphatic victory even more valuable.
