The Lagos State Government has reopened the Ojota and Maryland sections of the Odo Iya Alaro Bridge after a 54-day closure.

The rehabilitation project, which started on July 22, 2024, was completed in two phases: the Ojota-bound side was finished on August 23, 2024, and the Maryland-bound section was completed on September 13, 2024.

At the reopening ceremony, Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat addressed the issue of manhole cover theft, noting that the government has switched to fiber-reinforced materials instead of steel to prevent such thefts.

“Anyone caught stealing manhole covers will face prosecution,” Hamzat warned. “Maintenance of infrastructure is a priority in Lagos. We’ve repaired expansion joints and replaced stolen manholes with fiber-reinforced covers.”

Hamzat highlighted the administration’s focus on improving road and bridge infrastructure to:

  • Reduce travel time
  • Boost interconnectivity
  • Provide better riding surfaces
  • Eliminate traffic gridlock

He also stressed the government’s commitment to safety, with several pedestrian bridges slated for routine maintenance.

“To address infrastructure abuse, we are tackling security threats and misuse of roads and bridges head-on,” Hamzat added.

Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Engr. Olufemi Daramola, credited the project’s timely completion to the government’s dedication to easing motorists’ difficulties.
