Former Edo State governor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, has publicly sought forgiveness from Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin, for any past missteps during his time in office. This gesture was made during a speech at the 90th birthday celebration of Igbinedion in Benin City.

Oshiomhole expressed deep respect for Igbinedion, whom he described as a father figure, praising his contributions to society and acknowledging the critical support he had received from the elder statesman in his political career.

He openly admitted that without Igbinedion’s backing in 2007 and 2008, he might not have become Edo State’s governor. Additionally, Oshiomhole thanked him for his advice and guidance, both those he was aware of and those he was not.

The senator, referring to his Catholic faith, admitted that as governor, he might have made some regrettable decisions and sought Igbinedion’s forgiveness. He humorously likened Igbinedion’s vast influence and numerous supporters to a parent with many children, noting that some are bound to cause frustration. He reflected on his personal experience with his own children, noting that despite parental efforts, they sometimes act contrary to expectations.

Oshiomhole ended his speech by asking for Igbinedion’s forgiveness, expressing confidence that it would be granted. He also spoke fondly of Igbinedion’s visionary leadership, particularly in establishing Nigeria’s first private university and other ventures that had earned the country international recognition.

The former governor also used the occasion to mend his relationship with Lucky Igbinedion, expressing a desire to reunite with him.
