Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, founder of the Biafra Independence Movement (BIM), has criticized Simon Ekpa, the Finland-based self-proclaimed prime minister of Biafra in exile, for allegedly not advancing the cause of Biafra’s independence. Uwazuruike, who spoke at the 25th anniversary of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB)/BIM in Aba, stated that Ekpa’s advocacy for violence and his distance from the situation in Biafra undermine his legitimacy.
Uwazuruike, represented by the new Biafran prime minister, Ezinne Uwaezuoke David, reiterated that Biafra’s independence should be pursued through non-violent means, a principle that MASSOB/BIM has upheld since its inception on September 13, 1999. He emphasized that true commitment to Biafra’s cause requires one to start at home rather than from abroad.
“Simon Ekpa’s claim to be the prime minister of Biafra in exile is his personal perspective. However, genuine leadership begins from within. One’s actions must reflect serious involvement and stake in the nation they wish to build,” Uwazuruike said. He further stressed that while Ekpa remains abroad, he is actively working from within Nigeria, as endorsed by the United Nations People’s Organization (UNPO).
Addressing the proliferation of pro-Biafra groups, Uwazuruike expressed confidence that these factions would eventually unite, as the quest for Biafra’s independence progresses. He assured that the movement is committed to non-violence, rejecting bloodshed and conflict in their struggle.
“Today marks the anniversary of MASSOB’s founding. We have moved past violent methods and have achieved significant milestones, including recognition by UNPO. The growth of our movement is evident, and while there may be challenges, we are confident in our progress toward independence,” Uwazuruike stated.
He also highlighted the inclusivity of the new Biafran government led by Ezinne Uwaezuoke David, noting representation from various regions such as Bayelsa, Rivers State, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. This diverse representation counters any notion that the movement is solely focused on the South East.
The Biafran leader expressed optimism that all pro-Biafra groups would eventually align with the movement’s core values and objectives, reaffirming their commitment to a peaceful and unified path toward achieving Biafra’s goals.
