The Federal Government has issued a warning about a potential increase in Lassa fever cases as the season approaches. Dr. Jide Idris, Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), highlighted the need for heightened preparedness in a press conference held in Abuja on Wednesday.

Dr. Idris noted that while Nigeria has seen a reduction in outbreaks of yellow fever, diphtheria, and cholera, Lassa fever is expected to surge in the coming months. The country has reported 7,973 suspected cases of Lassa fever, with 982 confirmed cases and 168 deaths, resulting in a 17.1% fatality rate.

Lassa fever, a viral hemorrhagic fever transmitted by rodents, can cause severe symptoms including fever, bleeding, and death. Dr. Idris emphasized the importance of proactive measures to manage the anticipated increase in cases.

The NCDC’s recent updates show a significant decline in the number of reported cases for other diseases. For yellow fever, 1,728 suspected cases have been reported as of September, with 43 testing positive. Yellow fever can lead to severe complications such as hemorrhaging and organ failure if untreated, and vaccination remains the best preventive measure.

Regarding diphtheria, Nigeria reported 12,085 suspected cases in 2024, affecting 21 states and 170 local government areas. Diphtheria, caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheria, can lead to severe throat infections and complications if not treated. Out of the suspected cases, 7,784 have been confirmed.

The NCDC also reported a reduction in cholera cases, indicating that overall disease management efforts have been effective. However, Dr. Idris stressed that vigilance and preparedness are crucial as the Lassa fever season approaches.
