Following the devastating flooding that has plagued parts of Maiduguri metropolis, Borno State, since Monday night, Vanguard reports that dangerous animals such as crocodiles and snakes have taken over affected areas, particularly around the Post Office and Monday Market, close to the Shehu Kyarimi Park (Zoo).
In addition to the Shehu’s palace, several areas including the University of Maiduguri, its Teaching Hospital, Gwange, Moromoro, State Lowcost, 500 Abbagana housing estate, Monday Market, Lagos Streets, NUJ Centre, and Government House are submerged. This disaster has displaced millions and caused property damage worth billions of naira.
At press time, thousands of residents were seen evacuating their belongings to safer areas such as Bulumkutu, Gomari Airport, and Tashan Baga, as they call for government intervention.
President Bola Tinubu has called for the immediate evacuation of residents from the flooded areas and has pledged Federal Government support. Vice President Kashim Shettima, who conducted an on-the-spot assessment, described the floods as the most catastrophic in over three decades for Maiduguri.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari has termed the recent flooding across Borno and other states as a national calamity, extending his sympathies to the affected regions and hoping for effective relief measures.
Former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State has urged the Federal Government to urgently intervene in the flooding crisis in Maiduguri.
The flooding has occurred while Governor Babagana Zulum is out of the country and Deputy Governor Umar Kadafur is on leave. The Police Public Relations Officer of the Borno Command, Kenneth Daso, has advised the public to remain vigilant as efforts are underway to protect lives and property.
TINUBU ORDERS EVACUATION OF AFFECTED AREAS, PLEDGES FG’S SUPPORT
President Tinubu has directed relevant agencies to expedite rescue efforts in Maiduguri and has called for the immediate evacuation of affected residents. Tinubu expressed his condolences to the victims and assured collaboration with Governor Babagana Zulum to address the immediate needs of those affected. The National Emergency Management Agency has been instructed to assist flood victims.
