BISHOP OKONKWO: EDUCATION IS MORE THAN ACADEMIC CERTIFICATES

The founder of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Bishop Mike Okonkwo, highlighted that education extends beyond merely obtaining academic certificates. Speaking at the 23rd Mike Okonkwo Annual Lecture at the MUSON Centre in Lagos, Okonkwo stressed the need to combine theoretical knowledge with practical skills that enhance one’s life.

Okonkwo expressed concern over the state of Nigeria’s education sector, criticizing policymakers for what he perceives as a deliberate effort to undermine it. He urged students to acquire practical skills in addition to their academic qualifications, stating, “Education is more than just having certificates. People should have tangible skills that can help sustain their lives positively.”

Addressing moral issues, Okonkwo encouraged youths to become agents of change and make decisions that reflect integrity and righteousness.

During the lecture, awards were given out to winners of the Bishop Mike Okonkwo Annual Essay Competition:

  • Miss Flourish Olaoye of Christ the King International School won a N500,000 cash prize, a trophy, a plaque, and a set of computers for her school.
  • Miss Femi-Lawal Nora of Chrisland High School received a N250,000 cash prize, a plaque, and a computer for her school.
  • Miss Olayinka Esther Durotimi of Corona Secondary School earned a N150,000 cash prize, a plaque, and a computer for her school.

Four additional students received N50,000 consolation prizes each.
