The Coalition for Good Governance (CGG), consisting of over 90 civil society groups, has issued a stern warning about a plot against Nigeria’s democracy.
At a press conference in Lagos, the coalition emphasized the critical need for unity and vigilance to ensure peace and stability in the nation.
Mr. Nelson Ekujumi and Ajayi Popoola, who signed the statement on behalf of the coalition, highlighted recent developments that threaten the integrity of democracy and national security. They urged Nigerians to stay alert and resist any attempts to undermine democratic institutions and security.
The CGG also addressed the persistent fuel shortages affecting the country, describing the situation as a longstanding issue exacerbated by mismanagement, corruption, and sabotage. Despite Nigeria being the 15th largest crude oil producer globally, the country struggles with inadequate oil production due to theft and pipeline vandalism.
The coalition praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for its efforts to combat oil theft and improve fuel supply. They also condemned recent smear campaigns against the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and its leadership under Mallam Mele Kyari, acknowledging the company’s crucial role in maintaining energy security despite significant challenges.
The CGG commended the administration’s initiatives for enhancing transparency and accountability in the oil sector, including the directive for proper documentation of oil transactions and the support for local refineries. They expressed hope that these efforts will lead to the revitalization of national refineries and reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported petroleum products.
