Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration for what he sees as an alarming rise in oppression against civil society and media. Atiku’s comments come amid growing concerns about the administration’s focus on political intimidation rather than addressing security threats.

Atiku condemned the recent arrest of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero and other actions against organized labor and free speech. He likened the current situation to Nigeria’s harsh military dictatorships, accusing Tinubu’s regime of unprecedented control.

He also expressed concern over incidents like the brief detention of a journalist by security forces and criticized the government for targeting organizations like the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), which promotes good governance.

Atiku’s key message was a call for the Tinubu administration to redirect its efforts from political repression towards combating terrorists and bandits who are causing significant harm to Nigerians.

His remarks highlight ongoing debates about the administration’s priorities and effectiveness in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
