Newly promoted Ikorodu City FC, affectionately known as the Oga Boys, faced a harsh introduction to the NPFL, suffering a 3-0 defeat against Kano Pillars in their top-flight debut.

KANO PILLARS DOMINATE THE SECOND HALF

The match, held on Sunday, saw Kano Pillars dominate the second half, leaving Ikorodu City reeling from their top-tier initiation. Rabiu Ali, the 43-year-old midfield maestro for Kano Pillars, shone brightly, scoring twice in the second half. Ali’s goals came in the 69th and 79th minutes, including a spectacular free kick.

Mustapha Umar opened the scoring for Pillars in the 62nd minute, breaking the deadlock after a goalless first half.

SOCIAL MEDIA REACTS

Following the heavy defeat, NPFL fans took to social media to express their opinions, with many quick to mock Ikorodu City’s performance. Some fans suggested that the club consider selling their NPFL slot, while others drew unfavourable comparisons to relegated Sporting Lagos.

One comment read, “The only mistake you made was playing against Kano Pillars; it’s not too late to sell your slot,” highlighting the tough competition in the league.

Another fan pessimistically noted, “I doubt Ikorodu City will win 7 matches this season; they’re likely to relegate,” suggesting a challenging season ahead.

SUPPORTIVE COMMENTS

Not all reactions were negative, though. Some fans offered encouragement and constructive criticism. One supportive comment stated, “Don’t be discouraged; this is just the beginning,” while another advised, “You played well, but your attacking tactics need improvement.”

An optimistic City fan expressed hope for the future: “Next 7 matches are our 21 points, In Shaa Allah,” showing faith in the team’s ability to bounce back.

A TOUGH START FOR THE OGA BOYS

This defeat underscores the significant step up from lower league football to the NPFL. Ikorodu City will need to quickly adapt to the demands of top-flight football to avoid an immediate return to the lower divisions.
