FORMER MANCHESTER UNITED PLAYER LEAVES EUROPEAN FOOTBALL FOR BRASILEIRÃO ON TWO-YEAR DEAL

Former Atlético Madrid forward Memphis Depay has signed a two-year contract with Brazilian club Corinthians.

Why Depay Left Atlético

After his contract with Atlético Madrid expired, the 30-year-old Dutchman became a free agent and decided to continue his career in Brazil. Depay’s departure from Atlético was influenced by a contract clause that required him to play at least 45 minutes in 50% of available games. Since he did not meet this threshold, his contract was not renewed for the 2024-25 season, according to The Athletic.

Despite scoring 13 goals and providing two assists in 40 appearances for Atlético, Depay did not fulfill the playing time requirement, leading to his exit and move to Brazil.

Depay’s most notable spells in European football were with PSV Eindhoven and Lyon. His time at Manchester United was less successful; he scored seven goals in 53 appearances across all competitions after joining on June 12, 2015. He left United for Lyon in January 2017, less than two years after his move to England.

What Comes Next

Depay will aim to make an immediate impact for Corinthians, who are currently struggling in the relegation zone after 25 games. The 17th-placed team, just two points from safety, will face Botafogo in the Brasileiro on June 14, following a Copa do Brasil quarter-final clash with Juventude on Tuesday night.
