STRAY ELEPHANTS FROM CAMEROON DESTROY BORNO FARMLANDS

< 1 mn read

A herd of elephants from Cameroon has invaded and wreaked havoc on farmlands in Borno State, Nigeria. The elephants have primarily affected communities in Gamboru/Ngala and Kala-Balge Local Government Areas, causing extensive damage to crops and agricultural land.

This issue has persisted for the last five years, with the elephants migrating from a forest reserve in Cameroon and damaging crops during this period. The situation is worsened by flooding and security challenges in the border areas.

Efforts to manage the problem are obstructed by these factors, and there is a pressing need for resources such as guns and firecrackers to drive the elephants away. Local government and community leaders are calling for urgent measures to address the situation, including erecting barriers, employing trained personnel, and conducting awareness programs on elephant behavior.

Farmers have reported significant losses and are urging both state and federal governments to take swift action. The Borno State Government has requested intervention from the Federal Government and National Park Authority and is appealing for support from various stakeholders to address the crisis and assist the affected farmers.
