Closure Announcement
The Borno State Government has announced the closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state for two weeks, starting from September 9, 2024. This decision is a response to severe flooding that has displaced numerous residents.
Reason for Closure
The floods have caused significant disruption, including displacing individuals who have sought refuge in schools. This situation has necessitated the temporary closure to ensure the safety of students and to accommodate those affected by the disaster.
Current Situation
The Acting Director of Schools Services, Grema Bulama, indicated that the closure would last until Monday, September 23. This move follows reports that some schools were occupied by flood victims, making it impossible for classes to resume as initially planned.
Evacuation Efforts
Residents in affected areas are advised to use designated evacuation routes to ensure their safety. The Borno State Government has also established a flood emergency response committee led by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Bukar Tijjani, to manage the crisis.
Public Response
In Gwange Ward of Maiduguri, there was an incident where displaced individuals resisted attempts by government officials to vacate a school where they had been taking shelter. This highlights the ongoing challenges in managing the flood response and providing adequate assistance to those affected.
Government’s Statement
The Ministry of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the school closure and urged all parties to adhere to the directive.
