FLOODING IN KANO AND JIGAWA STATES: 68 DEAD, THOUSANDS DISPLACED, AND FARMLANDS DESTROYED

Since the onset of rainfall in July, flooding in Kano and Jigawa states has resulted in the deaths of at least 68 people. The breakdown of casualties shows that 31 deaths occurred in Kano and 37 in Jigawa.

In Kano, Executive Secretary of the Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Isyaku Kubarachi, reported that the flood affected 156 communities across 21 local government areas. The disaster resulted in 135 injuries, the destruction of 5,280 houses, and displaced 313 people.

In Jigawa, Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Haruna Mairiga, confirmed that 37 people have died due to the flooding. He noted that the flood has displaced 15,000 individuals and washed away 12,000 hectares of cultivated farmlands. The flood has impacted 17 out of the 27 local government areas in the state. Dr. Mairiga mentioned that affected individuals are currently taking refuge in schools where the government has provided bedding and blankets.

The flooding in both states has caused significant damage and displacement, highlighting the severe impact of the recent heavy rains.
