< 1 mn read

Conor Gallagher has addressed criticisms regarding his technical abilities following his summer move from Chelsea to Atletico Madrid.

Despite being a pivotal player for Chelsea under Mauricio Pochettino in the 2023-24 season, Gallagher was informed of a diminished role under new manager Enzo Maresca, prompting his £33.7m transfer to Atletico Madrid on August 21, 2024.

GALLAGHER’S RESPONSE

Speaking before England’s UEFA Nations League match against the Republic of Ireland, Gallagher refuted suggestions that his technical skills were inadequate. He highlighted his strong performances under Pochettino, stating, “I think last season I had a good season with Chelsea, and you could see by Pochettino playing me every game and showing his trust in me.”

GRATITUDE FOR CHELSEA

Gallagher expressed appreciation for the support he received from Chelsea fans and Pochettino. He reflected positively on his time at Chelsea, saying, “Honestly, with Chelsea, I have only got good things to say. Amazing football club, my boyhood club where I grew up through the academy.”

The 24-year-old midfielder noted the warmth and support he received from Chelsea supporters, which contributed to his positive experience at the club. “So I leave Chelsea with really special memories…the dream came true. So, I am very lucky,” Gallagher added.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR GALLAGHER

Gallagher will aim to earn his 19th cap for England against the Republic of Ireland on September 7 before returning to Wembley for a home match against Finland three days later.
