FG ANNOUNCES SALE OF SUBSIDISED RICE TO PUBLIC SERVANTS

Must read

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a program to sell 30,000 metric tons of milled rice at a subsidized price of ₦40,000 per 50kg bag. This initiative aims to alleviate the food crisis affecting the country and support public servants and other Nigerians facing economic difficulties.

Key Details:

  • Objective: The sale is part of a broader effort to enhance food security and address the economic impact of global food supply chain disruptions on Nigeria. This follows the government’s previous release of 42,000 metric tons of assorted food commodities to vulnerable groups.
  • Sale Implementation:
    • Location: The sale started in Abuja and will be expanded nationwide.
    • Eligibility: Buyers must present their National Identification Number (NIN) and phone number for verification. Civil servants must also be registered on the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) to qualify.
    • Policy: The sale will enforce a “one man, one 50kg bag” policy to prevent hoarding. Electronic payments will be required, and receipts will indicate collection points to avoid overcrowding.
  • Process:
    • Verification: Buyers need to provide NIN and, for civil servants, IPPIS registration.
    • Distribution: Multiple sales points will be set up nationwide for efficient distribution.

Official Statements:

  • Senator Abubakar Kyari, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to addressing food insecurity. He highlighted the importance of this intervention amid global food supply challenges.
  • Haruna Abutu, Director of Food and Strategic Reserve, assured the public of a transparent process and efficient distribution to ensure that the subsidized rice reaches those in need.

The initiative is expected to help ease the economic burden on Nigerians and contribute to food security efforts across the country.
