Ola Olukoyede, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has stated that the commission’s detention facilities rank among the best in Nigeria, meeting global standards of comfort and care. This declaration was made on Thursday during a roundtable on “Access to Justice for Young People,” organized by Rinsola Abiola, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Citizenship and Leadership.

Represented by Assistant Commander of EFCC, Tony Orilade, Olukoyede emphasized that the commission ensures every suspect is treated with dignity and granted fundamental rights, including swift access to justice. He highlighted that suspects at EFCC facilities are allowed access to their lawyers, family members, and medical care, with quality meals provided from the staff canteen.

Olukoyede also pointed out that many suspects experience remorse and repentance even before their prosecution, attributing this to the humane treatment they receive. The preference of some individuals to be remanded in EFCC custody rather than in traditional detention centers further underscores the high standards maintained by the commission.

Rinsola Abiola praised the EFCC’s efforts in fighting corruption, noting that the commission’s humane approach to handling suspects could play a key role in driving necessary reforms in Nigeria’s criminal justice system.
