The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has urged President Bola Tinubu to urgently reverse the recent increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), warning that the hike could lead to a rise in depression, hospital admissions, and overall mental health crises among Nigerians.
Dr. Babajide Saheed, Chairman of NMA Lagos State, made this appeal in a statement on Thursday, expressing concern over the compounded economic pressures facing citizens due to escalating inflation, high electricity tariffs, insecurity, and excessive taxation. The removal of petrol subsidies and the subsequent spike in fuel prices have added to the already heavy burden on Nigerians, exacerbating stress and poverty levels.
Saheed highlighted that the current economic situation is driving many healthcare professionals to leave the country, further straining the health sector. He cautioned that the situation could worsen, leading to more stress-related health issues, social unrest, and even an increase in mortality rates.
In response, the NMA called on the Federal Government to review its economic policies and prioritize the revitalization of local refineries to reduce dependency on petrol imports. The association also stressed the importance of addressing the persistent insecurity in the country to create a stable environment conducive to economic growth.
The NMA Lagos reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the welfare of its members, who continue to provide essential healthcare services under increasingly challenging conditions. Saheed concluded by emphasizing that with decisive and compassionate leadership, Nigeria could overcome its current challenges and build a more equitable and sustainable future for all.
The fuel price increase, effective from September 3, saw prices in Lagos at NNPC retail outlets rise from ₦568 to ₦855 per litre, with prices varying across the country.
