The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched a mobile app and the National Crash Reporting Information System (NACRIS) to tackle road traffic crashes and enhance road safety across Nigeria. The unveiling took place on Thursday in Abuja and was hailed as a significant milestone in the FRSC’s efforts to modernize its operations.
Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), highlighted that the digital transformation aims to improve the administration and effectiveness of the FRSC’s mandate. The mobile app and NACRIS are designed to raise awareness and educate drivers and passengers about factors contributing to road traffic accidents.
Between January and December 2023, 5,081 Nigerians lost their lives in road accidents, with 31,874 injured. In the first seven months of 2024, 2,776 fatalities and 16,309 injuries were recorded. The app offers real-time traffic updates, accident alerts, and road condition reports, providing users with essential information for safer driving.
FRSC Corps Marshal Malam Shehu Mohammed emphasized that the launch aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which focuses on digital transformation and economic growth. He noted that the app and NACRIS represent a deliberate effort to improve road safety administration through innovative technology.
The launch event was attended by notable stakeholders, including the Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Kenya High Commissioner to Nigeria Isaac Parashina, Emir of Zazzau Malam Nuhu Bamalli, acting President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Alhaji Issa Ore, and Director General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) Mohammed Bulama.
