The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has expressed grave concern over the recent increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), warning that it will exacerbate the poverty levels among Nigerian workers.

Festus Osifo, TUC President, stated in Abuja on Wednesday that the union is alarmed by the sudden hike, which was implemented without adequate consultation with stakeholders. He criticized the decision as a blatant disregard for the welfare of the Nigerian working class, who will bear the brunt of these increased costs.

Osifo also highlighted the additional burden imposed by a 250% increase in electricity tariffs, noting that electricity is crucial for the survival of the poorest members of society. He criticized the timing and scale of these increases, questioning why ordinary Nigerians are shouldering the costs while those in power enjoy increased allocations and affluence.

The TUC leader urged the government to reverse these decisions immediately, advocating for policies that would strengthen the naira and alleviate the suffering of Nigerians. He stressed the need for swift action to restore confidence and prevent further deterioration in living conditions.

Osifo reaffirmed the TUC’s commitment to defending the rights of Nigerian workers and advocating for social justice, fair wages, and improved working conditions. He warned that the combined effect of rising fuel and electricity costs could lead to increased hardship and potential social unrest.
